Air Marshal Anil Chopra—known for his distinguished flying career and his post-military service shaping defence policy through strategic think tanks like CAPS (Centre for Air Power Studies) and advisory bodies in military justice and SIDM (Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers)—recently sat down on Dostcast to unpack India’s operational readiness. From evaluating the multi-domain capabilities of the Chengdu J-20 to the supply chain bottlenecks of the LCA Tejas, the conversation provided a sobering look at the realities of modern air warfare.
Here is a breakdown of the critical insights into the strategic airspace shaping the subcontinent.
The Two-Front Threat and the “Chinese Hand”
When analysing the disparity between the Indian and Pakistani air forces, Air Marshal Chopra emphasised that the Indian Air Force (IAF) holds a distinct advantage in logistics, platform sophistication, and pilot training. However, the real concern lies in the geopolitical nexus between Islamabad and Beijing.
China‘s footprint in Pakistan‘s defence manufacturing is undeniable. The JF-17 Thunder and the newly inducted J-10C are Chinese-origin airframes, fundamentally upgrading Pakistan‘s strike capabilities. Furthermore, Beijing provides critical support in satellite imagery, command and control systems, and UAV technologies. The deployment of advanced Chinese munitions, such as the PL-12 and PL-15 beyond-visual-range missiles—used during Operation Swift Retort (referred to as Operation Sindoor)—highlights how deeply intertwined the two militaries have become.
Despite China operating over 400 fifth-generation fighters, India retains a massive geographical advantage. The IAF operates nearly three times as many airbases at the foothills of the Himalayas compared to the high-altitude airfields China relies on in Tibet and Xinjiang. High-altitude takeoffs severely restrict the payload and fuel capacity of Chinese fighters, effectively neutralising some of their technological overmatch.
Bridging the Fighter Squadron Gap

The S-400 Factor and the F-35 Conundrum
Speculation frequently circulates regarding the United States offering the F-35 Lightning II to India. However, Air Marshal Chopra clarified that no formal offer exists, entirely due to India‘s procurement of the Russian S-400 Triumf air defence system.
Washington strictly prohibits the co-location of the F-35 with the S-400 Triumf, a policy enforced rigorously against Turkey when it was ejected from the F-35 programme. Given that India already operates multiple units of the S-400 Triumf—and is negotiating for more—the F-35 remains off the table unless Washington grants an unprecedented strategic waiver.
The 2.5-Second Survival Window: Ejecting at 3,600 Feet
For a fighter pilot, pulling the ejection handle is the ultimate last resort—an explosive, violent sequence that tests the absolute limits of human physiology. On 24 February 2012, at the age of 59, Air Marshal Anil Chopra became the only Air Marshal in global aviation history to eject from a fighter aircraft.
He was flying out of Gwalior, acting as the Commodore Commandant of the prestigious No. 1 Squadron “The Tigers”—the same unit he had pioneered as one of the first Indian pilots to train on the Dassault Mirage 2000 in France.
Just five minutes after takeoff, passing 11,000 feet, a massive bang echoed from the rear of the aircraft. The engine temperature spiked, the fire warning light illuminated, and the engine RPM rapidly spooled down. Catastrophic engine failure.
As the fighter descended steeply, Chopra and his co-pilot, the Squadron CO, repeatedly attempted to restart the engine while reading out parameters over the radio—vital data that would later serve the Court of Inquiry.
